Clinical Trials

What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a research study seeking a new way to treat a disease. It is carefully regulated to protect people who volunteer to take part.

What are the potential benefits of taking part in a clinical trial?
  • You might receive a promising new treatment approach not available anywhere else.
  • The new treatment might be more effective than others.
  • You will receive regular and careful medical attention.
What are the potential risks of taking part in a clinical trial?
  • The treatment that you receive might not be any more effective than other therapies.
  • The treatment might have side effects that are serious.
You will be informed of the possible benefits and risks ahead of time.

How do I know if a clinical trial is right for me?
Your doctor will help you decide. Important questions to ask about a clinical trial include these:
  • What is the purpose of the trial?
  • Has the new treatment been studied before?
  • How does the new treatment work?
  • What are the possible benefits?
  • What are the possible risks?
  • How long will the study last?
  • Will there be any costs to me?
